Grey Heck, owner
Grey is no stranger to Chestnut Hill; she grew up in the neighborhood and graduated from Germantown Friends School. Her first job in the food industry was across the street from Cake at Vitesse, a take-out gourmet market. Although Grey has felt at home in the kitchen since she was a child, she really learned the art of baking at Rollers Restaurant in Chestnut Hill, which inspired her to attend culinary school. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, Grey came home to Chestnut Hill and worked at a bakery in Wayne making wedding cakes. She took this experience and opened Cake in March 2000. Grey’s favorite meal to make includes pan-seared scallops with a wine reduction, mashed potatoes and asparagus with a blueberry peach crisp and vanilla bean ice cream for dessert.

Joan Gigliotti, executive chef
Joan was inspired to become a chef by her grandmother “Doratea” and the memorable Italian Sunday dinners she made for their family. A graduate of the French Culinary Institute in New York City with a grande diploma in classic culinary arts, Joan previously worked as executive chef at Judy’s Café and as a sous chef at Alison’s at Blue Bell and Fork. She joined the Cake family in 2007 when the restaurant moved into the conservatory. She is a proud supporter of Lancaster Farm Cooperative, Maple Acres Farm and Weavers Way Farm. Joan’s favorite dishes to make include any kind of comfort food, and she especially enjoys pan-fried rainbow trout amandine and beef bourguignon.
